Just been outside to look at the total lunar eclipse tonight. Having seen it I'd say the description of it at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6411991.stm as "It is like Mars suddenly coming a thousand times closer and just hanging there in the sky above you" is fairly apt. It was quite interesting to look at, although possibly it looked more impressive in the run-up to the total eclipse when the Moon was still bright but a big dark shadow was obscuring half of it.
Earlier today I went to see "The Illusionist" at the cinema, I thought it was a reasonably good film, with some nice magic tricks, a reasonably intelligent plot and a good performance by Paul Giamatti as the policeman investigating Edward Norton's magician. However, the supposed romance at the centre of the plot was hurried and unconvincing and the film doesn't really live up to the superficially similar "The Prestige". After a couple of months of there being nothing at the cinema I really wanted to see there does seem to have been a few more interesting releases recently - in the last couple of weeks I've been to see "The Fountain" (a very weird film, although it does eventually make some sort of sense, some scenes are visually very impressive, I particularly liked the Mayan part of the story) and "The Good Shepherd" (well-acted, intelligent and frankly quite dull) and I'm going to see "Hot Fuzz" tomorrow which should be fun.
