I spent most of this weekend at
snowking's watching season 5 of TV series 24 in 24 hours with various other people. Although probably not the most sensible way to watch it (watching that many TV episodes non-stop is surprisingly exhausting considering it doesn't involve any physical activity), it was fun. The show is, as ever, slickly produced with good action scenes, a good cast and interesting (if occasionally unconvincing) characterisation, which mostly manages to compensate for the fact that 24 has become essentially a parody of itself with an overpowered Jack Bauer performing increasingly ludicrous feats and continually re-using plot devices from previous seasons. In a way I miss the original 24 where, for the first dozen or so episodes at least, it didn't require too much suspension of disbelief, but the more over-the-top plots of later seasons are probably more fun even if they mean that the show might not be quite as compelling as before. Season 5 does compare favourably to the last few seasons, benefiting from an extremely effective opening episode and an overall story arc that is a bit more coherent than some of previous seasons' plots, even if it is definitely best not to think too much about some of the detail of certain plot points.
Thanks to
snowking for providing 24 and
