DVD Recorders

williamjmMy 5-year old DVD player seems to be getting increasingly erratic in deciding whether it is actually going to play a DVD (and sometimes decides to stop playing it halfway through). For the moment, Phil has lent me a portable DVD player so it isn't urgent I get a new one although his DVD player, while playing more than my existing player (which never particularly liked any kind of recorded DVD or CD) and making a 'ping' noise when opening the drive that I find strangely amusing, does has a couple of irritations, namely the fact that all the menus are in German and the remote control does require more accurate aiming at the sensor than any other remote control I've ever used.
I may as well upgrade to a DVD recorder since I've got to get something new. Does anyone have any recommendations? I was thinking about one of the recorders with a built-in hard-disk drive and I'd want a multi-region player but other than that I don't really have any significant requirements.
On a similar note, I've been thinking of buying a new digital camera as well, since my existing Kodak camera is a few years old now and looking a bit out-dated. I'm thinking of the Fuji FinePix E900. Anyone any opinions on this camera?
