I went to the cinema today to see 'Sky Captain and the World Of Tomorrow'. Like just about every other major Hollywood film this year it was reasonably entertaining but ultimately fairly average.

I am quite impressed about how many classic b-movie features they managed to incorporate - Mad Scientists, Giant Robots, Dinosaurs, Giant Robots, Godzilla, Giant Robots, Minimal Characterisation, Giant Robots, Bats, Giant Robots, Rocket Ships, Giant Robots etc.

The Special Effects were quite nice, and the retro look made them refreshingly distinctive compared to the same-old-CGI in every other big-budget movie. The film would undoubtedly have been better if they hadn't made the depressingly common mistake of spending several years working on the special effects and several hours working on the script. Admittedly the plot was OK and nowhere near as bad as past CGI movies such as Final Fantasy but it was annoyingly unimaginative for such a visually imaginative movie.

I looked through the list of films coming out over the rest of the year and didn't see very much of interest - looks like 2004 could end up being quite a dull year for cinema.

Get a grip, Bill! It was a perfect adaptation of 30s pulp!
