I went to see "V For Vendetta" on Sunday at the cinema. Beforehand I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I thought the movie turned out to be quite good. It was entertaining, and by Hollywood standards it had a reasonably intelligent plot, even if it lacked subtlety and didn't say anything new that any of the previous "Rebellion against Big Brother state" films haven't said before. I'm also quite relieved that, despite the Wachowski Brother's involvement it didn't turn into a re-run of The Matrix trilogy and they were relatively restrained with the quantity of action scenes. I do think it could have been better if they had been a bit more daring with the plot. Although V himself had plenty of moral ambiguity, I think it would have been a more interesting film if the Government hadn't been such cartoonish Nazi-ish bad guys. Even though V's methods may be questionable there wasn't ever any doubt about his cause, and I think it could have been a better film if it hadn't been quite so black-and-white and the bad guys weren't just evil caricatures.

I haven't been to the cinema much this year, only been to see "V For Vendetta", "Good Night and Good Luck", "Syriana" and "Aeon Flux"[1]. Unfortunately, there just hasn't seemed to be much on worth watching, and looking at the next few weeks I can't see much worth watching (apart from maybe "Inside Man" which looks good from the trailer). Anyone know of any good films out in the next month or so?

[1] One of these films is not as good as the others, can you guess which one? ;)
