King Kong Died For Our Sins
Dec. 18th, 2005 09:30 pmI just got back from seeing King Kong. It was very entertaining, with many spectacular action scenes, some impressive special effects (particularly Kong himself), some beautiful cinematography, good acting, good characterisation in the first part of the movie (although many of the characters apart from the leads get a bit sidelined later in the movie) and a surprising compelling plot. It wasn't at all plausible, but I really don't care ;) I can't really think of any big negatives, although I felt the soundtrack was a bit bland compared to LOTR.
Yesterday I went to see The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe [1]. I wasn't sure how good this would be, even though I liked the books a lot as a child. I thought it was quite entertaining, the story is fairly simplistic and there isn't so much character development as characters suddenly changing when they meet a talking Lion, but it probably is about as good a film as they could make from the book. They managed to make the talking animals reasonably convincing, which is quite an achievement since talking beavers could easily be a bit silly. The acting was a bit variable, the girl who played Lucy was excellent but the other siblings were not so good.
On the smaller screen I just finished watching Season 4 of 24 on DVD. It was fun, as sadly implausible as ever (one day bad guys will learn to execute their plans simultaneously rather than sequentially leaving just enough time for (most of) their plots to be foiled), and I now want to see Season 5, but it seems it hasn't even started in the US yet, so it may be a while. I'm now watching "Is It Bill Bailey", an old stand-up comedy/sketch TV series from the late 90s starring Bill Bailey and Spaced's Simon Pegg. I've always found Bill Bailey amusing, and there are plenty of funny moments in it, even if his comic timing seems to have improved slightly in recent years, he's possibly a bit too manic in his delivery in this.
I've only got a couple more days at work this year, then I'm heading up to Scotland for a couple of weeks to do the traditional visiting of family. I might attempt to visit Edinburgh people as well sometime after Christmas (more likely after New Year), if anyone happens to be free around then?
[1] Or the JESUSLION movie[2], as I'm now forced to think of it after all the mentions of it as such in other people's posts [3].
[2] Since Aslan is voiced by Liam Neeson, I seem to now feel strangely compelled to call him JESUSLIAM.
[3] Despite the alleged Christian allegory of the story, I felt it wasn't particularly blatant. Just because a story has a Messiah figure in it doesn't automatically make it Christian propaganda.
