Over the last couple of years I've uploaded quite a few photographs onto Flickr. I don't really consider myself to be anything other than a fairly average amateur photographer so I was a bit surprised a few months ago to get an e-mail from a small publishing company in Ireland asking me if they could use one of the photographs I'd put up on a Flickr to use in a book they were doing. I said they could, but then didn't hear anything more about it after that so I was starting to think maybe nothing was going to happen.

However, today the book arrived. It is a pocket-sized book entitled "Scottish Wit and Wisdom". It's a short book basically consisting of assorted scenic photographs of various Scottish landmarks (including my picture) on a page with some random Scottish quotes on the opposite page. I've always quite liked the idea of one day having something I did published, I was expecting it to be more likely to be something I'd written rather than a photograph, but it is nice to see a published book I contributed to, even if it is a gimmicky small-press book.

Incidentally, the photograph is this one:

It's a photograph of the mountain Schiehallion in Scotland. I'm not quite sure why they picked this particularly photograph as while it is a nice enough photograph it is far from being the best picture I've got on Flickr and I'm sure there must be better pictures of the mountain elsewhere on the Internet.

Is it the Appletree Press book?

They are indeed a pretty small outfit, but small-press is probably under-selling them. After all, it is in stock at a pretty large number of Scottish Waterstone's.

Drop me an e-mail if you want any more info.

Yes, it is the Appletree Press book. Thanks for pointing for that out, looking on Amazon.co.uk they didn't seem to have it in stock (they have a 4-6 weeks delivery estimate and mention of an extra 'sourcing fee', which I'm guessing is Amazon's way of saying they have to order it direct from the publisher), so I wasn't sure how widely it would be available. I guess a large part of their potential audience is selling to tourists in Scotland, so it makes sense if it is more widely available in Scottish bookshops than online.

Very cool. :) You might be underselling the pic a bit, but I suppose it is hard to take a bad pic of something as lovely as Schiehallion...

I'm slightly critical of the pic, because IIRC the view was actually more impressive than it appears in the photo.

Congratulations! Nice that it did actually make it into a book in the end, rather than just having someone think about putting your pic in a book. :)
